Pulau Tioman: A Tropical Escape Off Malaysia’s East Coast
Pulau Tioman is a duty-free island located off Malaysia’s east coast, celebrated for its tropical beauty and rich biodiversity. Situated approximately 32 nautical miles from the mainland, the island is easily accessible by ferry.
With warm sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and lush rainforests, Tioman offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. As a designated marine park, the island is surrounded by colourful coral reefs and abundant marine life, making it a hotspot for diving and snorkelling. Its pristine rainforest is also home to unique wildlife, making Pulau Tioman a paradise for nature lovers from around the world.
Immerse in Mukut Village Life & Asah Waterfall Adventure
In the secluded village of Kampung Mukut, experience a slower pace of island life paired with one of Tioman’s most impressive natural wonders — Asah Waterfall.
Begin your journey by exploring the village’s serene beaches and traditional surroundings, where time seems to stand still. Then, follow a rainforest trail leading to Asah Waterfall, the tallest cascade on the island, where powerful waters flow over moss-covered rocks.
Along the way, you’ll be immersed in rich biodiversity, making the hike just as rewarding as the destination itself. This experience beautifully combines cultural immersion with nature — ideal for travellers looking to disconnect and recharge.
How to Get to Mukut Village
To reach Kampung Mukut and Asah Waterfall, disembark at Genting Jetty if travelling from Mersing, as Mukut Jetty is not directly accessible by ferry.
From Genting, you can take a water taxi or arrange for your Mukut accommodation to pick you up. Once in Mukut, Asah Waterfall is approximately a 1.5-hour hike away. Alternatively, locals can take you by boat to Warisan Eco Asah Camp Pier, reducing the hike to just 30 minutes.
Hike to Monkey Bay
Monkey Bay is a secluded beach tucked behind Salang Village on the west coast of Pulau Tioman. The sweeping bay features calm, clear waters framed by lush rainforest, creating a postcard-perfect tropical setting.
Reaching Monkey Bay is an adventure in itself. Hikers are rewarded with stunning views, a sense of accomplishment, and upon arrival, a tranquil beach ideal for snorkelling. Keep an eye out — monkeys are often spotted hiding among the trees.
How to Get to Monkey Bay
Monkey Bay is accessible via round-island speedboat tours from any village on Tioman.
Alternatively, visitors can hike for about 1 hour from Salang Village or take a longer 2-hour hike from Air Batang (ABC Village), passing through Panuba Bay and Monkey Beach. The trail can be obscure, so it’s best to follow the path nearest the electric poles.
The Juara Turtle Hatchery
Located in Juara Village, the Juara Turtle Project (JTP) is a conservation centre dedicated to protecting endangered sea turtles. Through interactive talks and educational activities, visitors learn about the challenges turtles face and the importance of eco-friendly practices.
For a hands-on experience, JTP offers volunteer programmes where participants can assist with conservation efforts. During nesting season, from March to October, volunteers may help collect turtle eggs or release hatchlings into the ocean — an unforgettable experience that fosters a deeper appreciation for marine conservation.
How to Get to Juara Turtle Hatchery
Arrive at Tioman Island by ferry and disembark at Tekek Village. From there, take a taxi across the island to Juara, costing approximately RM50–60 per person, or around RM30 per person if shared.
