The Battle of Longewala (1971)

The Battle of Longewala was one of the most decisive engagements on the western front during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.

On the night of 4–5 December 1971, Pakistani forces—comprising nearly 4,000 soldiers, T-59 and Sherman tanks, and a medium artillery battery—launched a massive attack on the Longewala border post, which was defended by the 23 Punjab Regiment of the Indian Army.

Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Indian soldiers displayed extraordinary courage and resilience. They successfully held their ground and requisitioned support from the Indian Air Force (IAF).

At dawn on 5 December 1971, Hunter aircraft based at Jaisalmer launched a devastating counterattack. The Hunters of 122 Squadron flew 18 sorties, destroying:

  • 36 enemy tanks
  • Over 100 military vehicles
  • Approximately 200 Pakistani soldiers

This decisive air and ground action completely halted the advance of the Pakistani forces and became one of the most celebrated victories of the war.
