When Bhairon Nath finally cornered her at the entrance of the Holy Cave, Mata Vaishno Devi revealed her true divine form and beheaded him. It is said that Bhairon Nath, in his dying moments, repented and sought forgiveness. The compassionate Goddess granted him salvation, declaring that her devotees must visit the temple of Bhairon Nath (located a little further up from the main shrine) after having her Darshans to complete their pilgrimage.

How to Reach Vaishno Devi: Your Travel Options

The journey to Vaishno Devi begins from the base camp of Katra.

By Air:

The nearest airport to Vaishno Devi is Jammu Airport (IXJ), also known as Satwari Airport. It is well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Srinagar.

From Jammu Airport to Katra: You can hire a taxi or take a pre-paid cab directly to Katra. The drive takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, covering a distance of about 50 km.

By Train:

The nearest railway station to Vaishno Devi is Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK). This station is a major railway hub and is directly connected to many cities across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad.

From Katra Railway Station: The station is just a short distance from the main market and lodging areas in Katra. You can easily find auto-rickshaws or taxis to your accommodation.

By Road:

Katra is well-connected by road to various cities in North India.

Buses: State-run and private buses operate regularly from Jammu Tawi, Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana to Katra.

Modes of Ascending to the Holy Shrine (13 km Trek)

Once you reach Katra, the actual pilgrimage to the Holy Cave begins. The trek from Katra to the Bhawan (the main shrine) is approximately 13 kilometers (8 miles), and the path is well-paved and lit throughout.

1. Walking (Pad Yatra):

This is the most traditional and revered way to reach the shrine. The entire path is cemented, with railings, sheds, and refreshment stalls along the way.

Time taken: Typically 4-6 hours, depending on your fitness level and pace.
Experience: Chanting “Jai Mata Di” with fellow pilgrims, the spiritual atmosphere, and scenic views make this a truly memorable experience.

2. Doli (Palanquin):
