Digi Yatra: Facilitating Easy Entry to Airports Using Face Recognition
Digi Yatra is a Ministry of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India led initiative to make air travelers’/passengers’ journey seamless, hassle-free, and Health-Risk-Free. The Digi Yatra process uses a single token of face biometrics to digitally validate the identity, travel, health, or any other data needed for enabling air travel.
DigiYatra technology facilitates passenger entry to the airport and the pre-security check area based on the Face Recognition System. This process significantly reduces processing time for passengers using DigiYatra. The DigiYatra facility enables passengers to link their travel and identity documents in advance, creating a facial scan that eliminates the need for them to show their boarding passes or identity cards upon arrival at the airport, during bag drop, or when proceeding for boarding.
Introduced by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA) and DigiYatra Foundation, this platform is the next step towards creating a digitally empowered society. The future of air travel, DigiYatra enables the automatic digital processing of flyers with the benefit of reduced wait time and makes the boarding process faster and more seamless. DigiYatra is built on four pillars, including connected passengers, connected flying, connected airports, and connected systems, and ensures easy entry at all checkpoints.
Registration/enrollment to the DigiYatra App is a one-time process. You don’t have to register every time you travel. For each new travel instance, simply add the new travel document and share your credentials prior to your travel.
At this time, the Digi Yatra app accepts only AADHAAR as it has been integrated; however, there are plans to integrate additional government-issued identity documents in the future.
Steps to Register
Step 1
Download the DigiYatra App by Digi Yatra Foundation from the Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS) and register using your mobile number and OTP. Aadhaar Linked Mobile Number is required.
Step 2
Link your Identity Credentials using DigiLocker or Aadhaar. Verify your Aadhaar using OTP.
Step 3
Take a selfie picture when prompted and upload it onto the app. Ensure that your picture is clear and has no obstructions.
Step 4
Update your Boarding Pass on the DigiYatra App and share it with the departure airport. Ensure that your name in the boarding pass, flight ticket, and Aadhaar are the same.
Not downloaded the app but want to register at the airport? No worries! Just go to the registration kiosk at the airport and register yourself to avail the benefits of DigiYatra on the day of travel!

Currently, this facility is activated at the following airports:
Varanasi, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Jaipur, Pune, Mumbai, Vijayawada, Guwahati, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Bengaluru, Mopa (North Goa). More airports are also getting added soon.
How to Use the DigiY Yatra App
Step 1: At DigiYatra Departure Entry Gates
- Scan your Boarding Pass on the DigiYatra E-Gate.
- Look into the camera & get your face scanned.
- The E-Gate will open to let you enter inside the Terminal.
Step 2: At Pre-Security DigiYatra E-Gate
- Walk up to the DigiYatra E-Gate at the security check.
- Look into the camera on the DigiYatra E-Gate.
- After validation, the E-Gate will open; proceed towards your Boarding gate.
Step 3: At Boarding Gate
- Once your Flight starts Boarding, look into the Biometric Camera at the Boarding Gate.
- Post your system validation, proceed towards the Aircraft.
Not all the uses mentioned above are available at all the airports where DigiYatra is used. But the systems are being rolled out soon in all major airports.
